Chris Burch has been a long-time icon in the fashion world. He has now taken his expertise and experience into hospitality. In 2012 Mr. Burch, along with hotelier James McBride, purchased a hotel on the island of Sumba in Indonesia. They then proceeded to renovate the beachfront hotel, spending $30 million turning it into a five-star destination resort. When the hotel reopened in 2015 it was renamed Nihiwatu. In 2016, Travel + Leisure voted the Nihiwatu the best hotel in the world.
In 2015, Chris Burch conducted an interview with Business Jet Traveler. While talking about the Nihiwatu, he said that buying and renovating the hotel was something he had decided to do for his children as well as the community that lives on Sumba. He said that the beauty of the island allowed him to do unique things that wouldn’t be possible anywhere else. He pointed to having a spa under a waterfall and a butler in every room as some of these things that were made possible on Sumba.
Chris Burch now has homes in Miami, the Hamptons, and in Indonesia. His home on the island of Sumba is called Raja Mendaka which includes the main home plus four villas on the property with all five structures having an attached private pool.
Mr. Burch is a serial entrepreneur. He started operating his first business, Eagle’s Eye Apparel, in 1976 when he was still studying at Ithaca College. Eagle’s Eye Apparel, in which he initially invested $2000 in along with his brother Bob, went on to become a $165 million clothing empire. Between founding companies and investing in new ones, Chris Burch has been involved in over 50 companies.
Mr. Burch is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Burch Creative Capital. His company is invested in lifestyle and consumer products. The industries he is involved in includes apparel, hospitality, retail, home furnishings, technology, and organic foods. He has used his expertise and experience to establish a number of well-known brands including Cocoon9, ED by Ellen DeGeneres, and Poppin. He has also been an early investor in Jawbone, Voss Water, and other brands.
In addition to the Nihiwatu, has a long history in real estate. He has built luxury homes in New York, Palm Beach, Nantucket, and Southampton. He was also a partner in the project that built the Faena Hotel + Universe in Argentina.
